Middletown, NY – David Borek, a 2018 graduate of Minisink Valley High School, has been awarded the 2018 Paul Rickard Memorial Academic Scholarship. David will be enrolling at SUNY Orange in the Fall of 2018 to major in Computer Science & Technology.
“I appreciate the decision to aid those who choose to begin their college careers at SUNY Orange, an institution that makes college more available to those who have financial limitations, or who wish to remain living in the community where they grew up. I believe that too many people undervalue the opportunities available at SUNY Orange and the decision to award a scholarship to a Minisink High School graduate attending SUNY Orange sends a good message that a person doesn’t have to start at a four-year university to have a meaningful college experience.”
Throughout David’s life he has used his tremendous work ethic to not only better himself but to better his community. He was inducted into the National Honor Society during his junior year in high school, was awarded numerous perfect attendance awards and maintained a 93 GPA throughout high school. This put him in the top tier of his class of 350 students. David also worked as a life guard at the Minisink Valley pool.
Outside of the classroom is where David really shined. For many years, David volunteered for Catholic Charities. He was a contributor for the “Stuff the Bus” and “Adopt a Family” campaigns. In both campaigns, David spent his time traveling throughout the county unloading, sorting, and packing clothing and toy donations for families in need. He did not stop there. In addition to Catholic Charities, he volunteered for a group that made weekly visits to elderly residents at Park Manor Nursing Home to aid in bingo games, played piano and singing to provide entertainment to the residents. He also gave back to the teachers and younger students at Minisink by being a member of the Study Buddies club.
The Rickard family was honored to select David to receive this year’s scholarship. “David checked all the boxes for what we want students to stand for when making a decision on who should receive the Paul Rickard Memorial Scholarship. David is an intelligent hard working member of our community which is illustrated by his academic, work and volunteer record. Everything he does is with the highest level of integrity whether it is in the class room, at work or serving his community. Students like David are the reason why scholarships like the Paul Rickard Memorial Scholarship is so important.”
